Understanding Age Calculation Systems Across Cultures | Age Calculator Insights

Different cultures have various ways of calculating a person’s age. This calculator uses the most common system, where age increases on each birthday. For example, someone who is 3 years and 11 months old will turn 4 on their next birthday, one month later. This system is widely used in Western countries.

In some cultures, however, age is calculated differently. For instance, some systems count age by including the current year. In this case, a person who is 20 years old might also be described as being in their 21st year. In the traditional Chinese system, a person is considered to be 1 year old at birth, and their age increases at the Chinese New Year rather than on their birthday. So, a baby born just one day before the Chinese New Year would be considered 2 years old two days later, even though they are only 2 days old.

Sometimes, calculating the exact number of months and days can be tricky, particularly when the starting date falls at the end of a month. For example, from February 20 to March 20 is considered one month. However, if you calculate from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022, there are two possible interpretations.

One could count from February 28 to March 28 as one month, resulting in an answer of one month and 3 days. Alternatively, if both February 28 and March 31 are considered the end of their respective months, the result would be exactly one month. Both approaches are valid. Our calculator follows the first method, counting the exact days between dates.
